As the countdown to the presidential and vice-presidential elections continues, the police have to deal with shutting down gambling rings.

Acting on a tip-off about betting activities on the presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the upcoming election, the Taichung police conducted a raid of a suspected gambling ring leader. Upon raiding the residence they discovered a pink safe filled with stacks of thousand NT dollar bills. A preliminary estimate indicated a total sum of several million NT dollars.

The police also discovered betting slips with the names Lai and Hou written on them, which are the names of presidential candidates Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜).

As well as the cash, police also received tips about the usage of virtual currency, Tether, in betting operations. Taichung City Police Department’s officer Chiang Ching-wan (江清萬) says there are different ways of betting, with the maximum bet amount reaching 1 million NT dollars per person.

The police have conducted a series of operations targeting the election betting rings, resulting in the arrest of 10 individuals. Various betting methods were discovered, contributing to an illegal money flow exceeding NT$ 18 million (over US$ 575 thousand). This included over NT$ 6 million (US$ 192 thousand) in Tether and NT$ 8.7 million (US$ 285 thousand) in cash.

As the countdown to the presidential and vice-presidential elections continues, the police remain vigilant to prevent the influence of underground betting on the elections.
