United States support for Taiwan will not be affected by elections in either the U.S. or Taiwan in 2024. That’s according to Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), who made the comments during an interview with German media outlets on Tuesday.
Wu says that bipartisan support for Taiwan in the U.S. Congress will not change regardless of who is in the White House. He adds that Taiwan’s policy of maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait will also not change, no matter who occupies the Presidential Office in 2024. Wu says that support for Taiwan has been growing not only within the U.S. but also among other democracies. Wu says statements from the European Union, G7 countries, and others have all emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Wu says that China’s attempts to sow discord between Taiwan and other countries have failed, as shown by the fact that countries in Eastern Europe and the Baltics remain open to Taiwan.
Wu thanked the German government for its support in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He says that trade and economic relations between Taiwan and Germany have been strengthened in recent years and that the new TSMC factories in Dresden demonstrate that. He says that the two sides should consider having higher-level meetings between government officials to discuss issues of interest in the future.
