Search and rescue operations are underway for three Taiwan Navy sailors who were lost at sea on Thursday. The Navy Command R.O.C. issued a press release on Friday morning with updates on the search.
Six sailors on the warship Haihu fell overboard due to excessive swells which damaged safety rigging. Three of the men were quickly pulled from the water, but efforts to find the three remaining sailors continued throughout Thursday evening and into Friday.
Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁), who arrived in Chiayi to follow the search’s progress on Friday, says that search and rescue efforts continue and that he hopes to hear good news soon. Chen adds that the best possible medical care will be provided to the three men who have already been rescued.
Two coast guard ships were also dispatched to search the area around the Xiaoliuqiu islands, but so far have not reported any news.
