The Taiwanese film Island in Between has been shortlisted for the 96th Academy Awards preliminary nominations for Best Documentary Short. The announcement of this rounds’ Oscar nominees is expected on January 23, next year.
Taiwanese-American director S. Leo Chiang (江松長) tells the story of Kinmen Island from a gentle and humanistic first-person perspective, weaving together tourist visits and the daily lives of locals. Through the lens, he leads the viewer to explore the underlying uneasiness and rare peace on the island, all the while provoking thought about Taiwan's uncertain future.
Culture Minister Shih Che (史哲) congratulates Chiang and says that Island in Between shows the soft power of Taiwanese films. He adds that he is proud and wishes the film a successful win at the upcoming Oscars.
Island in Between has been released on the New York Times Op-Docs platform.
The winners of the 96th Academy Awards Best Documentary Short will be announced at the awards ceremony on March 10, 2024.
