The extension of mandatory military service to one year is one among many new laws and regulations that will take effect starting January 1, according to a press release from the Interior Ministry on Friday.
The decision to extend conscription for men born after 1994 from four months to one year was announced just over a year ago. The one year period also applies to those taking substitute or alternative military service, such as firefighting or healthcare related service.
Other regulations beginning after the new year include a cabinet program to improve pedestrian safety. Revisions to the Immigration Act will also take effect, including relaxing requirements for foreign spouses to stay in Taiwan for the purpose of raising children.
Additionally, the Human Trafficking Prevention Act will become valid next year, which includes amendments that, among other things, increase the severity of punishments for related crimes.
