As a cold wave sweeps across Taiwan, Taiping Mountain in Yilan has become a magical winter wonderland. It has once again ignited the Taiwanese passion for chasing snow.
Video script:
The temperature on Taiping Mountain dropped to minus two degrees Celsius on Friday, causing leaves to freeze into icicles and the landscape to transform into a snowy fairy tale. Excited snow chasers came up the mountain just to witness and enjoy this unexpected snowfall.
One lady says that she is so excited and didn’t expect there would be so much snow. Some university students braved the early morning hours, arriving at 3 a.m. to engage in lively snowball fights. Others, who had booked their trip two months in advance expecting only a nice hike, were pleasantly surprised to stumble into their first snowfall experience.
Another visitor was visibly excited and says she feels like the heavens have been too kind to her and her partner. She says it is their first snow experience in Taiwan, and the thick layer of white snow is truly a stroke of luck.
Some students boldly shed their coats and t-shirts and braved the chilly weather for some nice photo ops. One of the students says he decided to wear short sleeves to stand out from the crowd.
However, not every mountain is lucky enough to see snow. Footage captures the morning temperature on Taiwan’s tallest mountain Yushan dropping to minus 5.7 degrees Celsius, creating a dreamy misty scene but no snow.
Datun Mountain registered a temperature of 1.5 degrees, but backpackers who braved the rain hoping to catch a glimpse of snow were left disappointed.
Whether venturing out to chase snow or not, one piece of advice remains constant - do not compromise on warm clothing.
