Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that it welcomes any measure that contributes to the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This was in response to the latest military developments between the U.S. and China.

On December 21, U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. met with his Chinese military counterpart, People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Gen. Liu Zhenli by video teleconference. The last time that U.S. and Chinese officials of similar rank talked was in 2022.

In addition to discussing global and regional security issues during the meeting, Brown stressed the importance of the PLA engaging in substantive dialogue in order to avoid misunderstandings. U.S. defense officials have observed increasing provocative actions from the Chinese military and noted how requests for engagements were ignored or denied.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry Spokesperson Sun Li-fang (孫立方) said that security and stability around the Taiwan Strait have a significant impact not only on the region but also on the world. The Defense Ministry is open to any course of action that would help, given that this is a global concern.
