Setting off fireworks and firecrackers at night and during the day is always a highlight of New Year celebrations. Although many people associate the cultural tradition with warding off malevolent spirits, the custom is also intended for fun and entertainment rather than superstition.
In the past, firecrackers were made of thin bamboo rods that were whipped about when lit to release a popping and crackling sound.
