Setting off fireworks and firecrackers at night and during the day is always a highlight of New Year celebrations. Although many people associate the cultural tradition with warding off malevolent spirits, the custom is also intended for fun and entertainment rather than superstition.

In the past, firecrackers were made of thin bamboo rods that were whipped about when lit to release a popping and crackling sound. The loud bursts of noise and flying sparks of fire undoubtedly stirred up feelings of fear and excitement and created anticipation about the beginning and conclusion of many festivities.

These days, the turning point of the year in Taiwan culminates in a dense and dazzling display of fireworks launched from Taipei 101. The popular celebration attracts tens of thousands of revelers from all over Taiwan as well as large international crowds. Whether slivers of bamboo or a pyrotechnic spectacle, people still look forward to a more peaceful and prosperous New Year.
