The Central Bank of Taiwan’s 2024 commemorative year of the dragon coin set is expected to sell out shortly after its Lunar New Year release.
Every year preceding the spring festival, the Central Bank of Taiwan launches zodiac themed coins. The upcoming collectible set is composed of one silver coin containing one tael (38 grams) of silver, and one copper alloy coin, both cast using advanced techniques highlighting detail. Recently, the cost of silver has risen, reflected in the coins’ increased price from NT$1,800 to NT$1,900 (US$58 to US$61) this year.
Since the dragon is a popular zodiac animal, the bank expects a rush to buy the 90,000 limited copies. Central Bank of Taiwan Issuance Director Teng Yen-ta (鄧延達) points out that the dragon is a symbol of nobility and synonymous with excellence according to our folk customs.
Two methods of purchase will be available soon. 45,000 units each will be allocated to online pre-orders open January 8 at 10 a.m. and over-the-counter sales starting January 22.
