President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) met with former U.S. National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley and former Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg at the Presidential Palace on Monday morning.
In a speech, the President pointed out that the delegation's visit demonstrates U.S. support for Taiwan's democracy and thanked the U.S. for its attention. She said she hopes that Taiwan-U.S. relations will continue to advance and become an important driving force for regional and global development. Tsai also expressed her belief that as the partnership between the two countries improves, they will be able to expand cooperation in areas such as environmental sustainability, technological development, education, and culture.
Steinberg replied by emphasizing that the U.S. policy toward Taiwan is consistent and continuing. He also reiterated the stance of the U.S. regarding issues on the Taiwan Strait saying that the U.S. attaches great importance to resolving cross-strait disputes through peaceful means and dialogue, and opposes any unilateral behavior to change the status quo.
In his statement, Hadley pointed out that Taiwan's democracy has set a shining example for the world and is a democratic success story based on transparency, the rule of law, and respect for human rights and freedoms.
