The opposition Kuomintang (KMT) on Monday has decided to formally nominate Legislator-elect Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) and Legislator Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) for the legislative speaker and deputy speaker positions respectively.

KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) who issued a resolution after the KMT held a meeting on Monday for new legislators said that the Han-Chiang nomination received unanimous support from all the KMT legislators. He also thanked Legislator-elect Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁) for being willing to support and work with Han and Chiang. Fu, who was originally interested in running for the position of legislative speaker, gracefully withdrew his candidacy to support the KMT party’s nominees.

DPP caucus convener Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) already stated the intent of the ruling party DPP last Saturday to re-elect incumbent speaker You Si-Kun (游錫堃) and deputy speaker Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌) for another term.

During the recent Jan. 13 elections, none of the political parties secured the 57 seats required for a majority in the legislature. The KMT won 52 seats, the ruling DPP has 51, TPP won 8 seats with the last 2 seats going to independents.

The Legislature’s first session will be officially held on February 1, 2024.
