Co-chairs of the U.S. Congressional Taiwan Caucus arrived in Taiwan to support the island nation. That’s according to a report by Reuters on Wednesday.
Offices of Republican Representative Mario Diaz Balart and Democratic Representative Ami Bera said in a statement that the visit aims to “reaffirm U.S. support for Taiwan, express solidarity in the shared commitment to democratic values” and explore further trade and defense opportunities between the U.S. and Taiwan.
The statement further added that Balart and Bera will also be meeting with senior officials and business leaders.
The Taiwan Caucus co-chairs recently issued a congratulatory press release after President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) won the January 13 elections. In the message, it said that bilateral relations between the U.S. and Taiwan have been facilitated by the Taiwan Relations Act which has brought about decades of beneficial economic, security, and trade relations. It added that the co-chairs look forward to working with the President-elect to further strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.
