Seafood vendors are going all out, even allowing customers to sample whole scallops pan-fried to golden perfection. And there’s nothing fishy about these deals, as vendors spare no expense in trying to draw in customers.
With an eye on convenience and affordability, the Fishermen's Association of Changhua County is hoping to seize opportunities during the festive season. They have introduced a variety of seafood gift boxes that include whole fish, shrimp, and even flying fish roe—perfect for both hot pot and traditional New Year dishes.
White pomfret is among the most traditional holiday fishes. However, this year's catch has been relatively small, leading to prices as high as NT$1200 (US$38) for 600 grams. However, vendors say there are other less expensive but equally delicious options. Fishermen’s association representative Chen Wei-ku (陳威谷) suggests swallowtail, which signifies a joyful atmosphere with its festive red color.
Shoppers looking to buy seafood this year have many options, including markets, live-streaming platforms, and fisheries associations each offering unique experiences. For example, some seafood stores are offering packaged sets that include lobster, fish fins, and premium beef slices, at the price of NT$2680 (US$86).
Market vendors, like Liu Chien Hsien (劉建賢), says convenience is important to holiday cooking when time is limited. Live streams have also become a popular way to buy, as their demonstrations of cooking techniques and direct ordering make it easy for consumers to enjoy a hassle-free Lunar New Year.
