The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that would prevent certain people who receive income in both the United States and Taiwan from being taxed in both countries. The United States-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act was included in a larger package of tax bills known as The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024. The bill includes numerous tax cuts and tax credits for businesses and families.

The issue of double taxation has been one of the major issues in free trade negotiations between the U.S. and Taiwan.

Cabinet Spokesperson Lin Tze-luen (林子倫) on Thursday said he was grateful to the United States for engaging with Taiwan on important issues such as this. He says the passage of the bill shows that there is a great deal of consensus on ending double taxation in both countries. He says he hopes all the relevant procedures needed to make the bill into law will move quickly, and that Taiwan will continue to promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation with countries across the world.

The bill must now be passed in the U.S. Senate before being sent to the president to be signed into law. The White House has recently expressed support for the bill.
