The TSMC Kumamoto factory opening ceremony will be held on February 24. Chairman Mark Liu (劉德音) and CEO C.C. Wei (魏哲家) will be in attendance, with Founder Morris Chang (張忠謀) possibly also present to witness this historic moment.
TSMC has been actively expanding its global manufacturing base, including building an advanced wafer factory in Arizona, USA, expected to be able to mass-produce a 4-nanometer process beginning in 2025. Plans to jointly construct a special process wafer fab in Dresden, Germany are also underway.
The Kumamoto factory should have mass-production capability in the fourth quarter of 2024, which is TSMC's fastest-developed overseas fab. TSMC has invited Japanese officials, joint venture partners, suppliers, and customers to attend the grand opening.
With the Kumamoto fab’s success, TSMC is actively evaluating the construction of a second wafer fab in Japan. According to the company, if it decides to build a second factory, it will produce 7-nanometer or 16-nanometer processes to complement the Kumamoto fab’s 12nm, 16nm, 22nm, and 28nm processes.
