A newly established overseas talent base was unveiled in the Philippines to attract international students to study in Taiwan, on Monday. President Lee Tien-shang (李天祥) of Kun Shan University, which is the base’s main partnership university in the Philippines, says he hopes to enhance overseas recruitment and industry-academia cooperation for a win-win outcome for all parties involved. Participants from eight Taiwanese universities and five Filipino universities attended the official launch event of the talent base in Makati City.
Political Deputy Minister of Education Mon-Chi Lio (劉孟奇) delivered a video speech at the event and expressed his hope to promote bilateral university cooperation through the new base and to encourage more Filipino students to study in Taiwan. Kun Shan University said that the base's main missions would be to facilitate international industry education, academic exchanges, and Chinese language learning.
The opening of the base comes after the Cabinet announced last year that it would invest NT$5.2 billion (US$ 165.8 million) over a five-year period to encourage overseas students to study and remain in Taiwan. It hopes to set up ten overseas talent bases and simplify the measures for permanent residency, to retain 210,000 international students to stay in Taiwan by 2030.
