The Interior Ministry warns the public to be vigilant of fire safety during the Lunar New Year holidays. According to the ministry’s National Fire Agency

statistics, more than 140 residential fires occurred last year, resulting in 9 deaths and 6 injuries. The most common cause of fire was electrical at 41.5% followed by cooking fires at 21.8%.

During the holiday, family gatherings increase gas and electricity consumption. The Interior Ministry added that oil fires are especially dangerous during the holiday as people become distracted by activities and conversations. It also advises that range hoods and exhaust pipes should be cleaned regularly to avoid accumulated oil and dirt. Furthermore, newer stove models are more energy efficient and include safety features such as temperature sensors or timers to prevent cooking accidents.

In addition to reminding the public to extinguish stovetops and ranges as well as turn off electrical appliances when they are not in use, the Interior Ministry has issued five tips for fire safety during the Lunar New Year:

Inspect power sockets and wiring for damage.
Do not place flammable materials around electric appliances or fire sources.

Use items as instructed and heed warning labels.
Be careful not to exceed circuit power consumption load.
Unplug devices when they are not in use.
