It was recently discovered that Taiwan has been given the designation “Taiwan, province of China” in Japan’s National Diet Library website.

Online visitors must register on the library's website to access the search function. It is during the registration of the country of residence, that the mislabelling of Taiwan was found.

When asked by local media on the matter, the Foreign Ministry confirmed during a press conference on Tuesday that they are aware of the error. It said that the Japanese version correctly showed the word "Taiwan", but the website’s English version shows "Taiwan, province of China."

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) said that Taiwan’s representative office in Japan has already been instructed to lodge a solemn protest on the matter, asking the library to label Taiwan, the Republic of China, as a sovereign and independent country.
