Foreign ministers of the United States, Japan and South Korea met on the sidelines of a G20 ministerial meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Thursday, local time. During the meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa discussed efforts to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

In a press release on Friday, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed appreciation to the foreign ministers for their continued attention to the Taiwan Strait issue. It pointed out that this isn’t the first time the three countries met on the matter. A trilateral summit was held last August where the three nations made a joint statement declaring their strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to alter the regional status quo through coercion or force.

The ministry added that other similar declarations have been made from last year to present, such as during the G7 summit and at bilateral meetings between the U.S. with like-minded countries, demonstrating the consensus of the international community regarding the importance of upholding cross-strait and regional peace and stability.

The ministry emphasized Taiwan's role as a responsible member of the international community and affirmed its commitment to collaborating with the United States, Japan, South Korea, and other like-minded partners to safeguard the rules-based international order and promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
