The Taiwan government committed on Saturday to donate US$300,000 in relief supplies in response to the ecological crisis caused by a devastating forest fire on the slopes of Guatemala's "Volcan de Agua" (Volcano of Water).
According to a press release by the Foreign Ministry, the Guatemalan government has called for urgent assistance from the international community to help with disaster relief efforts. Given the longstanding friendship between Taiwan and Guatemala, the government promptly announced its decision to donate $300,000 in aid to Guatemala. Guatemala is one of Taiwan’s 12 remaining diplomatic allies worldwide.
The ministry said that in addition to the donation, the Taiwanese technical mission in Guatemala has also provided 30 safety helmets and 6 sets of wireless electrical equipment. Taiwanese expatriates in Guatemala have also donated 1,000 boxes of instant noodles.
The ministry expressed hope that the donated relief supplies would assist the Guatemalan government in the country's recovery efforts and mitigate the impact of the forest fires on the local ecological environment.
