The Taiwan government has been hard at work balancing the country’s sovereignty while maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait in the midst of a maritime dispute with China.

Escalating tensions between Taiwan and China have been evident in recent days, with Chinese marine surveillance vessels briefly entering Taiwan waters on Monday. The move comes in the wake of a series of incidents, including the increase of Chinese patrols near Kinmen, triggered by a Taiwan’s Coast Guard patrol boat chase ending in the deaths of two Chinese nationals.

Responding to these developments, Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) said in an interview that the maritime situation is being closely monitored and that Taiwan is prepared to take necessary measures to safeguard its interests. Chen emphasized Taiwan's commitment to upholding maritime safety and fishers’ rights operating in the region.

Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) said the maritime incidents are being investigated by the Taiwan Coast Guard and the Defense Ministry will not comment on the matter. He expects the case will be handled appropriately and hopes it will not further escalate.

Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) underscored Taiwan's sincerity to negotiate and resolve the incidents utilizing a humanitarian approach.  However, she emphasized the need for both sides to approach the issue in good faith and urged for mutual cooperation to de-escalate tensions.
