The election for the legislative conveners took place earlier on Thursday, with results securing one convener seat each of the eight committees for both the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Previously, the KMT was rumored to be backing the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) candidate in the conveners' election, though later the KMT supported their candidates as expected. The TPP members all cast their votes for KMT candidates for each committee. With neither of Taiwan's two major parties, the KMT and DPP, winning an absolute majority in the legislature election on January 13, the smaller TPP became a key driver.
Taiwan’s legislature has eight committees in charge of internal administration, foreign and national defense, economics, finance, transportation, education and culture, social welfare and environmental hygiene, and judiciary and organic laws and statutes.
