A total of seven U.S. senators jointly sent a letter to Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo on Thursday. The letter affirmed the significance of the diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and Guatemala and urged for the continued strong support for Taiwan. That’s according to a press release from the office of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio.

Arevalo, who took office in mid-January this year, stated in early February that Guatemala has no intention of jeopardizing its diplomatic ties with Taiwan, even as it seeks closer economic connections with China. He pledged to strengthen relations with both parties.

In the letter, Senators Marco Rubio, Jeff Merkley, Chuck Grassley, Tim Kaine, John Boozman, Roger Wicker, and Steve Daines expressed concerns about the increasing pressure from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The senators believe that the CCP endangers the fundamental democratic principles in the Western Hemisphere.

The senators also acknowledged the challenges in the global political landscape, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. They commended Guatemala's stance in supporting Taiwan amid these challenges.

In addition, they noted a significant decrease in Chinese investments in Latin America, despite promises and pledges made by the CCP. They also commented on how several projects funded or contracted by Chinese enterprises remain incomplete or have not commenced.

Finally, the senators praised Arevalo for his leadership and said they stand united in supporting Guatemala's democratic principles. The senators encouraged Arevalo to remain resolute in his support for Taiwan, stating that it reflects the Guatemalan people's desire for a future based on democracy, economic growth, and respect for freedom.
