On behalf of the Presidential Office, Spokesperson Olivia Lin (林聿禪) welcomed visiting Governor Gretchen Whitmer of the U.S. state of Michigan and her delegation on Monday.
Lin reports that President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will be receiving the group separately on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning respectively. Both sides will exchange views on economic, trade, and technological cooperation between Taiwan and Michigan, and Taiwan-U.S. economic and trade relations overall.
Lin says that Taiwan and Michigan have strengthened industry-academia cooperation in recent years, especially in high-tech fields such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence. In addition, the Michigan State Senate and House of Representatives established a bipartisan "Taiwan Friendship Caucus" in March 2022 and has passed pro-Taiwan resolutions for two consecutive years.
Lin states that the Presidential Office hopes that through this visit, cooperation and exchanges between Taiwan and Michigan in various fields will be deepened, strengthening bilateral trade cooperation and investment relations.
