During the legislative session on Tuesday, Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) gave a positive response to Democratic Progressive Party legislator Lin I-chin’s (林宜瑾) inquiry about making Labor Day a national holiday.

Premier Chen says that he has listened to the voices of workers and is open to considering whether Labor Day should be uniformly observed nationwide. However, he emphasized that appropriate adjustments would be necessary.

However, Interior Minister Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) stated that currently, the total number of national holidays in Taiwan is fixed and regulated by legislative resolution. As the allocation of holiday hours is already fully utilized, any decision to make Labor Day a nationwide holiday would require adjustments. Lin emphasized the necessity of consensus among stakeholders before further complementary measures can be taken.
