The Legislature’s Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee convened on Wednesday to discuss the impact of opening Taiwan to Indian migrant workers with the Labor Ministry.
Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun (許銘春) summarized the timeline for the implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on labor cooperation. She said Taiwan and India signed the MOU on February 16, with the Foreign Ministry confirming the completion of signed documents on February 26. She added that a report will be sent within 30 days for review by the Cabinet and the Legislature.
Hsu clarified that it is only after the review that subsequent working-level meetings will be held with the Indian side. It is during these meetings that the number of workers, industries to be opened, language requirements, and other related matters will be discussed. The timeline of the entry of Indian migrant workers will depend on the results of the working-level discussions. Hsu emphasized that the trial operation will be small-scale with expansion plans depending on the outcomes. Hsu also underscored that as long as the relevant requirements are met, all Indian migrant workers are welcome to Taiwan and India’s rich and diverse culture will be respected.
