President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) received a delegation of U.S. think tank scholars at the Presidential Office on Monday. The delegation includes the German Marshall Fund’s (GMF) Indo-Pacific Program Managing Director Bonnie Glaser, Eurasia Group Managing Director Rick Waters, and others.

In her welcoming remarks, Tsai thanked the delegation for their long-standing concern about cross-strait situations and support for Taiwan. She says their scholarly reports have helped the world better understand the key role Taiwan plays in the region.

Tsai continued to say that the U.S. is an important partner in security and economic affairs. She added that the first batch of the U.S.-Taiwan 21st-Century Trade Initiative has been signed, and she hopes that the issues of double taxation between Taiwan and the U.S. will be solved in the future. Tsai also stated that Taiwan will continue to strengthen collaborations with the U.S. in fields such as digital economy, emerging technologies, and telecommunication security.

Responding to these remarks, Glaser applauded Tsai for her leadership over the past 8 years, which has maintained peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and safeguarded freedom and democracy in Taiwan. She emphasized that Tsai is one of the most eminent partners of the U.S. and other countries. She said she believes that U.S.-Taiwan relations will remain rock solid, built on the foundation Tsai has established, even after the end of her presidency.
