The White House released its budget for fiscal year 2025 on Monday. For the first time in history, the detailed budget contains military aids to Taiwan. The Biden administration is asking Congress for US$100 million as a standalone request for Taiwan military assistance.

Within the US$7.266 trillion Federal budget, the Biden administration plans to dedicate US$4 billion to bolster U.S. alliances and partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region. That is nearly $600 million above the 2023 level, according to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.

In response, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jeff Liu ( 劉永建) says that the U.S. has separately listed Taiwan in its budget for the first time, allocating funds to assist Taiwan in enhancing its deterrent capabilities. Liu says that this once again demonstrates the high level of importance the U.S. places on Taiwan's defense needs. The Foreign Ministry expresses a warm welcome for the gesture and thanks the U.S. for continuously fulfilling its security commitments to Taiwan in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances.
