As KMT legislators continue to push for an absentee voting bill, Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) reminded on Tuesday that the mechanics of such a bill would require careful deliberation.
The premier gave the response during an interview at the legislature. He reiterates that voting is a citizen's right protected by the Constitution. He underscores the importance of the government in ensuring the fairness of the electoral process. He says that an absentee voting bill would require further discussions on how to maintain the secrecy of the ballot and ensure the accuracy and fairness. Chen adds that as such, the Cabinet currently has no plans on the matter.
Taiwan currently requires all voters to cast their ballots on election day at polling stations designated according to their household registration. As a consequence, a mass exodus of the Taiwanese population returning to their hometowns occurs in the days leading up to election day. Those who cannot return to their location of registration, end up unable to exercise their right to vote. However, implementing absentee voting raises concerns regarding potential foreign interference, particularly from China.
