Current Vice President and President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) met with a delegation of scholars from Washington on Wednesday, expressing gratitude for their continued support of Taiwan and attention to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

During the meeting, Lai highlighted that despite international attention to Chinese pressure during Taiwan’s recent elections, the Taiwanese people are committed to democracy and participation in the international community.

President-elect Lai Ching-te and Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) are due to take office on May 20. Lai acknowledged the importance of maintaining Taiwan Strait stability and urged continued cooperation and international support for fostering peace in the Indo-Pacific region.

In economic matters, Lai noted that due to political and economic instability, many Taiwanese businesses are relocating out of China to countries including the U.S. and Japan, as well as Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Lai added that Taiwan aims to further integrate into the global supply chain and looks forward to receiving U.S. support.
