Social housing goals have nearly been reached, according to Interior Minister Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) at an Internal Administration Committee Legislature meeting on Monday. Lin delivered a report detailing the positive results of last year’s housing law amendments and active plans for the next stage of the Interior Ministry’s housing policy.

Lin said that more landlords have been encouraged to join the ranks of public welfare lessors, expanding housing security for families with children. He stated that, as of the end of February 2024, roughly 430,000 households have been accepted for rent subsidies and about 489,000 households have been approved for low and medium-income mortgage loans. Lin adds that approximately 97,000 social housing units have been built, and 72,000 vacant housing units have been converted for rent. He points out that the overall social housing care measures have the ability to cover nearly 1.1 million households in total.

Lin also outlined the next stage of the housing policy, which requires that the urban planning process dedicate percentages of areas in developing cities near mass transit for social housing. He said that additional incentives for participation in the housing policy will be offered, and public housing volume will also be increased, emphasizing that sustainable housing supports social stability and deepens democracy.
