Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) on Wednesday said that simulations of Taiwan set up by China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA) indicate their future focus areas. He says the simulations serve as a warning to the Taiwanese armed forces, which remain vigilant and prepared.
Minister Chiu made the comments in response to concerns over recent PLA footage of an Eastern Theater Command military training activity, featuring a simulated backdrop resembling a Taekwondo gym in Taoyuan.
Recent satellite images also show the construction of a full-scale bombing range within the replicated “Bo'ai Special Zone” at a PLA base in Inner Mongolia. The zone is a to-size reconstruction of Taipei’s Bo’ai Special Zone, a restricted area surrounding the Presidential Office and other government buildings.
Chiu says that it is inevitable that any country would set up simulations of an enemy country and if Taiwan had a suitable space for this, Taiwan could also simulate other areas. However, Chiu says Taiwan’s operations are defensive in nature, therefore there are many simulations of Taiwan. He says that these simulations show where the focus of China could be, and that Taiwan’s military is prepared.
