"My heart felt a bit strange like something abnormal was happening in the back area," explained Ms. Chou (周).

She elaborates that a few days ago, she joined her friends on the 9-day, 8-night Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage, but as she was walking, she started feeling unwell, and the pain gradually increased.

Mrs. Chou was immediately rushed to the hospital, where an examination revealed that she had suffered a myocardial infarction, known as a heart attack. Thankfully, she had the protection of Mazu she said, attributing her survival to the goddess's blessing.

The attending cardiologist, Dr. Chih-Chung Feng (馮致中), explained that when a myocardial infarction occurs, there is a golden window of roughly 30 minutes. Within this timeframe, it is crucial to unblock the clogged artery as soon as possible to preserve heart muscle.

Dr. Feng emphasized that if symptoms such as dizziness, chest tightness, or pain spreading to the back area are experienced, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately. Failure to receive timely treatment significantly increases the risk of complications and sudden cardiac death.

As the Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage concludes, the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage will commence on April 5th. Doctors advise participants to stay hydrated by continuously replenishing their fluids to prevent blood from thickening, which can slow blood flow to the heart and increase the risk of heart attacks.
