In a gathering of nearly a hundred people, the Georgia General Assembly celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, hosted by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Atlanta. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger praised Taiwan’s vital role as a U.S. ally, commending its resilient democracy amidst pressure from across the strait.

The US Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act on January 1, 1979, to create a legal basis for Washington’s relations with Taipei. Conversations between Georgia legislators and Taiwanese business leaders focused on Taiwan-US relations, Taiwanese cuisine in Georgia, and business landscapes.

In a press release, TECO highlighted that the event was attended by Taiwanese entrepreneurs and beloved bubble tea spots in Georgia. They shared their successful American business journeys with Secretary Raffensperger, the Taiwan Caucus co-chair, state legislators, and guests who enjoyed live demonstrations of making brown sugar bubble tea.

The occasion also showcased delicious treats from the Taiwanese-founded Panda Express and Flying Biscuit Cafe. Taiwan Caucus co-chair Teri Anulewicz emphasized Taiwan's vibrant economy and strategic importance.

TECO Director Elliot Yi-Lung Wang (王翼龍) described the Act as the bedrock of Taiwan-US collaboration, noting advancements in security, economics, education, and culture. Notable achievements include continued U.S. arms sales, trade agreements, and educational initiatives strengthening ties between the U.S. and Taiwan.
