Both Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) and New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) confirmed their participation at the upcoming 2025 World Masters Games during the event’s press conference on Monday. Chiang said that he would let the public vote on which events he should join, while Hou said being a former policeman, he would not want to miss out on the shooting events.
Chiang and Hou added that aside from personally competing in the games, teams from the Taipei City Government and New Taipei City Government will also be participating. Citizens are highly encouraged to participate, with Chiang saying that this “will be an unforgettable experience." Hou also underscored how this would be an opportunity to meet many like-minded people from abroad.
Chiang and Hou pointed out that an estimated 40,000 athletes from 110 countries will come to Taiwan to compete at the games, along with their friends and families. Billions of dollars in tourism revenue is expected to be generated which will benefit the entire country. Both Chiang and Hou highlighted their hope for more foreign friends to get to know Taiwan through the event, enhancing Taiwan's international visibility.
Taipei and New Taipei City will jointly host the 2025 World Masters Games, which will be held next year from May 17 to 30. 35 different sports events will be held at 68 venues distributed in 6 cities and counties. Anyone over 30 years old can participate individually or form their own teams. Registration is on-going, with those who complete registration by April 17 enjoying a 30% discount on the registration fee.
