In a call with the Chinese President (習近平) Xi Jinping, U.S. President Joe Biden reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. That’s according to the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

According to an official statement by the White House on Tuesday, Biden and Xi held frank and constructive discussions on bilateral, regional, and global cooperation and disagreement. Biden emphasized the importance of peace, stability, rule of law, and freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea.

The ministry, which closely monitors high-level U.S.-China interactions, noted the strong mutual trust and open communication channels between Taiwan and the United States. During such interactions, both sides remain in close contact. Biden's reaffirmation of the U.S. commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, following his initial support voiced in the State of the Union, was welcomed by Taiwan's government.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) stated Taiwan, as a responsible member of the international community, will continue strengthening its self-defense capabilities, deepening the comprehensive Taiwan-U.S. partnership, and working closely with like-minded partners to uphold the rules-based international order. He added that this effort aims to safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, ensuring freedom, openness, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
