Over 600 aftershocks recorded in 74 hours: Central Weather Administration

In the wake of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Hualien on Wednesday, the Central Weather Administration has reported a total of 603 aftershocks within a span of 74 hours, as of 10 a.m. Saturday. Among these, there have been two aftershocks ranging from magnitude 6 to 7 and 21 aftershocks between magnitude 5 and 6.

The initial earthquake occurred at 7:58 a.m. on April 3, with a depth of 15.5 kilometers and its epicenter located 25.0 kilometers south-southeast of Hualien County, off the eastern coast of Taiwan. 

As of 10 a.m. today, the agency's latest statistics show that in the 74 hours following the main quake, there have been a total of 603 aftershocks. These include two aftershocks with a magnitude of 6 to 7, 21 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 5 to 6, 191 aftershocks from magnitude 5 to 4, and 389 aftershocks from magnitude 4 to 3.

According to authorities, there have been 134 significant perceivable earthquakes, including the main shock, and 470 small-scale earthquakes. The region remains on alert as the aftershocks continue.
