Vice President and President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) received a delegation from the U.S. think tank Project 2049 Institute at the Presidential Office on Thursday. The delegation was led by the institute’s Chairman Randall Schriver.

Lai stated in his remarks that the members of the delegation are all specialists in international relations, regional security, and national defense. He added that they have offered positive and meaningful advice on security issues in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region, applauding them as a force for maintaining global stability.

Citing media coverage from the recent U.S.-Japan summit held at the White House, Lai noted that U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida have both asserted their consensus to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.

Lai continued to say in addition to Taiwan’s economic development and national welfare, he and the Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) will commit themselves to safety in Taiwan, stability across the Taiwan Strait and peace in the Indo-Pacific region after assuming office on May 20.

Schriver began his remarks by congratulating Lai on being elected Taiwan’s next president. He commented that Lai will soon lead a country boasting a robust democracy, a healthy economy, and respect for human rights and religious freedom. He expressed keen interest in knowing more about Lai’s vision for the new government and looks forward to future cooperation.
