The overall reconstruction budget for Hualien's transportation and tourism infrastructure following the April 3 earthquake could reach NT$3 billion (US$ 92.4 million), according to Transportation Minister Wang Kwo-tsai (王國材) on Wednesday.
Wang attended the Legislature’s Transporation Committee to report on transportation response mechanisms during earthquakes and to discuss the eastern extension of National Freeway No. 6 in Hualien. In a media interview, Wang said that the total cost to rebuild Hualien's eastern railway and tourism could potentially reach NT$3 billion but awaits final confirmation from the Cabinet, with an announcement expected in May or June.
Wang says tourism reconstruction will be implemented in three phases, including implementing relief measures, providing hotel accommodations for those whose homes were damaged, and providing subsidies for independent travelers and tour groups. He did not confirm whether specific measures would be announced before Taiwan’s new cabinet takes office on May 20.
Regarding the eastern extension of National Freeway No. 6, Wang says the Transportation Ministry strongly supports having a safe route for eastern Taiwan residents to return home. He adds that the ministry initiated tunnel exploration and geological surveys at the end of last year. It is estimated that by 2026, after completion, feasibility studies can commence. Wang hopes these projects can proceed based on the Cabinet’s medium to long-term case plan.
