President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) received a delegation of Lithuanian think tank scholars led by Lithuania’s former Foreign Deputy Minister Mantas Adomėnas at the Presidential Office on Thursday.
In her welcoming remarks, Tsai extended a warm welcome to Adomėnas's return visit to Taiwan and conveyed heartfelt appreciation for Lithuania's generous donation of 50,000 euros towards the reconstruction efforts in the earthquake-affected areas of Taiwan. She expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the Taiwanese people.
Tsai noted the increasing exchanges of experiences tackling issues such as misinformation and cybersecurity between Taiwan and Lithuania to mutually safeguard the values of freedom and democracy. She added that Lithuania has reiterated its regard for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, along with its support for Taiwan’s participation in international society. She said she believes the two countries can work together to consolidate the force of democratic nations and make contributions to global prosperity.
Adomėnas highlighted in his remarks the similar historical predicaments faced by both Lithuania and Taiwan. He stated that Taiwan’s aspiration for sovereignty, independence, and international recognition reflects its people’s hope to maintain their current lifestyle. He applauded Taiwan as an island of genuine freedom and a beacon of human rights.
Adomėnas also expressed concerns about the forces of imperialism currently encroaching on the sovereignty of other nations, preparing for aggressive actions. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of smaller countries like Lithuania and Taiwan to enhance cooperation and mutual assistance. He stressed that only through adequate preparation can the unfortunate occurrence of war be prevented.
