Heavy rainfall hit Northern Taiwan on Thursday morning, causing floods and leaving a couple of vehicles stranded in a tunnel.

Motorcyclists braved the rain, navigating through ankle-deep waters that turned the road into what seemed like a river. The heavy downpour on Thursday morning caused traffic congestion, leaving many motorcyclists stranded and pedestrians soaked by passing vehicles.

The staff at Taipei Main Station were busy trying to combat the flooding at the MRT Airport Line’s entrance, with industrial cleaning machines to clear the area. The waterlogged conditions were described as rare, with reports indicating depths of approximately 20 centimeters. Commuters expressed frustration as they were forced to take detours, which significantly extended their travel times.

The Beitou area of Taipei faced its own challenges, with intersections experiencing knee-deep flooding in the morning. Vehicles struggled to navigate through the submerged tunnels, with some even stalling due to the water levels.

One of the drivers said she didn’t think it would be that bad and thought she could pass through. However, after the engine died, she was unable to turn it back on.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued warnings for heavy rainfall across various regions, particularly in central and northern areas, advising residents to remain vigilant for potential thunderstorms and exercise caution when going outdoors.
