CEO of the Foundation of Medical Professionals Alliance in Taiwan Lin Shih-chia (林世嘉) said Thursday that Taiwan's immediate priority is to strongly counter and clarify United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. Lin made the comments in reference to Taiwan's participation in the 77th World Health Assembly (WHA), set to convene in Geneva on May 27. Taiwan has not received an official invitation to attend the WHA as an observer since 2016.

Lin explained in an interview that Resolution 2758 only recognized the People's Republic of China as China in the U.N. and did not address Taiwan's representation. However, Lin says that China continues to mislead the international community by claiming that Resolution 2758 equates to the one China principle. Lin says that this hinders Taiwan’s participation in various international organizations. She adds that this provides China with legal grounds to exert diplomatic pressure on Taiwan.

Lin adds that she believes Taiwan should leverage the international support it received during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to mobilize strong opposition to and clarification of Resolution 2758 in all international forums to facilitate its participation in the WHA.
