The General Assembly of Chinese Culture announced the main theme of the 16th President and Vice President’s inaugural ceremony and state banquet: “Weaving Taiwan together; progressing democracy” in press release on Friday.

The events will be held on May 20 with the ceremony hosted by TaiwanPlus interpreter, translator, and English anchor Ethan Liu (劉傑中) alongside SET News’ Jasmine Liu (劉宸希). SET News anchor Kuo Ya-hui (郭雅慧) and mixed-race Taiwanese model and polyglot Kevin Tai (戴凱文) will host the state banquet.

This year’s primary visuals are designed by YEN Design Director Yen Po-Chun (顏伯駿) and will utilize intertwined pink, yellow, blue, and white ribbons to represent the main theme of the conference. Describing his vision for the design, Yen explains that the four colored ribbons symbolize freedom, democracy, confidence, and friendliness. He elaborates that the ribbons are woven together into the shape of Taiwan, conveying that the island is comprised of people from all walks of life with different and sometimes conflicting values coming together. Yen said that the ribbons further extend into the portraits of President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), suggesting they will lead the way to a better future for the people.
