Legislative Foreign and National Defense Committee Convener KMT Legislator Ma Wen-chun (馬文君) spoke on Monday, announcing a postponement of the Taiping Island trip originally scheduled for May 16.
Led by Ma, a delegation of 20 lawmakers from both the KMT and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) originally planned the visit to underscore the nation's sovereignty over the island. The visit was scheduled to occur just before the presidential inauguration ceremony.
However, an important legislative agenda including votes on a parliamentary reform is scheduled for the following day, May 17. Ma explained that due to the considerable distance between Taiping Island and the main island of Taiwan, any unforeseen weather disruptions could potentially prevent legislators from returning to the main island. Therefore, the delegation determined it would be best to postpone the trip to a later date.
