In an exclusive interview with Rti news, Taiwan Representative in Lithuania Constance Hsueh-hong Wang (王雪虹) addresses the tripartite reconstruction aid plan for Ukrainian schools and the Russian disinformation which is threatening that relationship. Wang points out that the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania is on a diplomatic frontline – stabilizing relations between the two countries while offering practical assistance to support Ukraine through the help of the Lithuanian government.
The Lithuanian government is closely following the war in Ukraine, which has had a galvanizing effect on the government’s geopolitics, notes Wang. She says that with Taiwan facing similar threats from China, it is a situation that hits very close to home.
Regarding past reporting that Taiwan-made machinery was sold to Russia via third-party countries like Türkiye and China, Wang clarified that regarding Taiwan's export control, it strictly abides by the “Wassenaar Arrangement” an is consistent with the positions of the EU, the U.S., Japan, and other countries regarding control mechanisms on items such as conventional arms and dual-use goods. She emphasizes that the rumor that Taiwan was supplying Russia is believed to be misinformation spread to disrupt Taiwan’s trilateral relations with Lithuania and Ukraine.
The representative office has worked closely with the governments of Lithuania and Ukraine on several reconstruction projects in Ukraine with a focus on education. This includes the reconstruction of schools and kindergartens across Ukraine to provide students of all ages with a safer and more stable learning environment. In addition to education, which remains the priority of all three countries, Wang aims to introduce Taiwan’s private sectors through NGOs for an even greater humanitarian effect in the future.
