With inauguration day fast approaching, DPP legislators have expressed concerns about whether China will take advantage of this time to launch cyberattacks, conduct cognitive warfare, or even attack critical infrastructure.

In response, National Security Bureau (NSB) Deputy Director Hsu Hsi-hsiang (徐錫祥) said that since the CCP regularly engages in cyberattacks and hacking, the NSB has always followed this activity closely. To date, such incidents are only observed periodically, and the NSB quickly responds whenever they occur.

DPP legislator Chen Kuan-Ting (陳冠廷) noted that when former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August 2022, China hacked into electronic signs in public places and convenience stores to publish messages attempting to influence public opinion.

When asked if the NSB has any information about whether a similar attack may be launched on or leading up to the inauguration ceremony May 20, Hsu assured legislators that the NSB and national security team are closely following the CCP’s activity at this time. He said the relevant authorities will be alerted and will respond immediately as soon as anything occurs, and will also inform the public as needed.
