Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) stated in an interview at the Legislature on Wednesday that Taiwan has still not received an invitation letter to the World Health Assembly (WHA). He emphasized the government's persistent efforts to amplify Taiwan's voice in the international community.
Taiwan has gained more support from higher-ranking countries than in the past and public opinion is noticeably shifting. The Foreign Ministry urged the Director-General of the WHO to recognize Taiwan's professional capabilities and contributions. They also highlighted the risks of excluding Taiwan from the global public health system.
Wu outlined strategies for advocating Taiwan’s participation in the WHO, which includes engaging with diplomatic allies and like-minded nations to lobby the WHO Secretariat, strengthening international recognition, and organizing the Taiwan WHA Action Team to convey Taiwan’s appeals for inclusion and contributions to global health.
Wu also mentioned the increased levels of international engagement with Taiwan, noting in particular the support they have received from democratic nations, and expressed confidence in higher public support this year.
