President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) welcomed a delegation of dignitaries led by the Paraguayan president Santiago Peña Palacios at the Presidential Office on Tuesday.
In his remarks to the delegation, Lai thanked Peña for his steadfast support for Taiwan’s international participation and their sincere friendship. Lai highlighted Peña’s characterization of Paraguay as a sleeping giant that is about to awaken. He says he hopes Taiwan will continue to deepen its partnership with this South American giant and advance together toward freedom, stability, and prosperity.
Peña says that while Paraguay’s capital city, Asunción, and Taipei are far apart geographically, the connection between the two countries has never been closer. He also highlighted the similarities in historical development between Taiwan and Paraguay, noting that both countries have grown through struggle and overcome challenges.
Peña says the peaceful and orderly transition of power in Taiwan signifies the victory of democracy, demonstrating Taiwan’s commitment to the values of freedom and democracy and its pursuit of peace and prosperity. He added that he hopes both countries will continue to work together towards a glorious future.
