The Foreign Ministry thanked the EU on Friday for promptly stating its opposition toward the PLA’s Joint Sword-2024A military exercises around Taiwan. The EU further stated that it opposes any unilateral change of the status quo through force or coercion.
The Foreign Ministry expressed their gratitude toward the EU for continuing to push for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry emphasized that Taiwan will continue to strengthen ties with like-minded partners over the shared ideals of democracy, freedom, and rules-based order, with the goal of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific region.
For their part, the EU External Affairs Department said that China’s military exercises have only increased cross-strait tensions. The EU has a direct interest in preserving stability in the region, and has called on all parties to show restraint and level-headedness, and to resolve disagreements through dialogue.
The Foreign Ministry responded Friday saying Taiwan’s belief in adhering to democracy will not waver in the face of coercion. Stability in the Taiwan Strait is a priority of the international community. Taiwan will continue striving to maintain the status quo, and has called on China to stop unilaterally disrupting peace and worsening tensions.
