Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao (鄭英耀) said that Chinese students could be admitted to Taiwanese universities as soon as July of next year. This was stated in response to media inquiries at the Legislature on Monday.
President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) May 20 inauguration speech mentioned resuming engagement with China based on the principles of equality and dignity. Aiming for mutual peace and prosperity, Lai proposed the resumption of bilateral tourism and educational exchanges as he urged China to acknowledge Taiwan and its government.
Cheng said the Education Ministry is actively communicating with its Chinese counterparts regarding the admission of Chinese students. Cheng underscored that in addition to providing scholarships, Chinese students have been included in the National Health Insurance system since February 1 of this year. With a satisfaction rate of over 70%, this indicates how the Taiwanese government has provided robust support to Chinese students.
Cheng stated that the government is committed to providing a high-quality learning environment for Chinese students in Taiwan. He expressed hope for more Chinese students to come to Taiwan in the future, fostering greater interaction and understanding among young people across the strait.
